District Six Museum - Preserved with Love

District Six was home to about 10% of Capetonians until 1970’s. In 1965, over 60,000 people were forcibly removed and relocated to the Cape Flats, as District Six was declared ‘white’ land. This not only saw to an exodus of people, but also a disintegration of culture, community and rich, unique Cape history.

The District Six Museum Foundation was launched as a museum in1994, five years after its establishment, resuscitating the memories of District Six. It’s mission was a channel of promoting social justice, and as an institution of truth, challenging misconceptions and untruths in South Africa’s history. The Museum is dedicated to revealing the many stories of the areas forced removals and helping in restructuring the community.

Policies:
1. Works to assist the victims of forced removals in District Six, Cape Town and South Africa.
2. The Museum is a centre for reformation of the former residents of District Six.
3. The Museum seeks to act as a vessel of social development of the city.
4. It works to build partnerships and alliances with similar South Africa communities, as well as globally in a quest to discus heritage policy development.

HOURS:
9h00 – 15h00   Mondays (doors close at 14h00)
