| Gay Travel in South Africa - Entertainment and nightlife |
Constantly referred to as the rainbow nation (mostly by ourselves!) these days the term encompasses not only the incredible diversity of culture and race, but also in our tourism. Gay travel, or pink tourism- a phrase coined to describe the niche gay, bi-sexual and transgender tourists, is a growing industry in South Africa. South Africa is in fact a consistent top ten contender for best Gay holiday destinations globally.
In 1994, with South Africa becoming a democratic government, the equality of sexual orientation, was constitutionally guaranteed and two years later, SA became the fifth country in the world to legalise same sex marriages.
The Pink Route, is a collection of gay-owned, gay-managed or gay-friendly accommodation spots across South Africa, starting in Cape Town.
Green Point, right next to the V&A Waterfront is the hub of Cape Town’s gay scene, with clubs like Bronx and Beaulah bar, and the raunchy The Knead late night bathhouse and massage parlour. The fantastic nightlife, including bars clubs theatres etc, makes for an exciting holiday whether gay or straight. Cape Town especially, caters for all needs.
Then there are the incredible beaches, including Cape Town’s predominantly gay, nudist beach, Sandy Bay. Cape Town has established itself as a welcoming host to gay tourism in South Africa, but the rest of the country is playing catch-up. The Pink Route extends up the West Coast, Route 62, the Garden Route, and into Gauteng. Even traditional game reserves have tour operators offering specifically gay-friendly guides and packages.
If it’s a holiday you’re after, then it’s a good idea to plan your trip around one of our famous pink events, especially the annual theme party, Mother City Queer Party, bringing gay and straight SA out in full plumage. The vibe is awesome, with everybody having a good time, dressed in costume, surrounded by fabulous decor, DJs and live acts.
If you're looking for a fun, safe and Gay destination for a holiday, South Africa is the place to be.
