| Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens - Cape Town's Garden of Eden |
Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is world renowned for the beauty and diversity of the Cape flora it displays and for the magnificence of its setting against the eastern slopes of Table Mountain. Encompassing 528 hectares, the Kirstenbosch estate grows only indigenous South African plants, including fynbos flora and natural forest. Collections of SA plants, especially from winter rainfall areas of the country are on display in the cultivated garden. The Visitors centre has an information desk, a coffee shop and retail stores.
Summer sunset concerts are a highlight on Sundays from December to March, and artists such Michael Buble, Watershed, Katie Melua, Josh Groban and Bryan Adams have all graced the stage at the stunning Kirstenbosch ampitheatre. On the last Sunday of every month there is a craft market at the stone cottages, except during winter. There are numerous forest and fynbos trails on the estate, with maps obtainable from the Information Office for next to nothing. On Tuesdays and Saturday mornings you can book group bookings or special interest tours through the Information Office (Tel: (021) 761 4916), hosted by volunteer guides.
