Cape Town - South Africa's X-Factor city

A mountain with a top as straight as Robin Hood’s arrow, hugging the rugged coastline, a city promising unique experiences, sights, sounds tastes, this is CAPE TOWN.

Regardless of whether you’re from Berlin or Benoni, you will have an opinion on this vibrant city of Cape Town will not leave you unaffected. People who have travelled the world say it is the most beautiful place on earth, and who are we to argue? In fact as citizens of this land, we cannot dispute the fact that it is one of the most incredible places you’ll ever visit, as it’s one of the most incredible places we’ll ever visit!

So what makes it so special? The people? The scenery? The culture? The nightlife? The food? The adventure? Yes and no, these are all contributing factors, but still allows space for the intangible and unexpected, part of this interesting city. Like pieces of a chameleon puzzle, the different suburbs of the city seem to slot together seamlessly, albeit sometimes very strangely. Often a visitor gets the feeling that like the multi-cultures of the city, there are many layers and textures to what constitutes Cape Town, South Africa.

Besides doing the South African safari, Cape Town is the first city on most visitors list of places to see in South Africa. The most popular city in Africa, Cape Town offers so much to see and do that many visitors stay in Cape Town and don’t feel the need to see the rest of the land. This speaks volumes for the fair city, but also does an injustice to the rest of the country. Tourism is one of Cape Town's greatest assets as it generates income and creates jobs, business and other opportunities.

The favourable Mediterranean climate assists in the appeal of the city, along with stunning natural setting, and a relatively well-developed infrastructure. Among the many popular natural features that attract tourists, are Table Mountain, Cape Point the dramatic tip of the Cape Peninsula. Many tourists also drive along Chapman's Peak Drive when it is open, a narrow snaking road along the rugged coast with views of the Atlantic Ocean and mountains.

Blessed with two very different Oceans, namely the Indian and Atlantic Oceans, Cape Town beaches are a popular draw card. Beaches vary in setting, atmosphere and temperature, due to the unique coastal geography. Beaches located on the Atlantic Coast tend to have very cold water and those on the Indian Ocean side are warmer by about 10 degrees. While both coasts are popular, the Atlantic Ocean laps the more affluent shores of Cape Town, and places such as Camps Bay are more developed with restaurants and cafés, with a particularly vibrant strip of restaurants and bars along the beachfront. Boulders Beach near Simon's Town is known for its African penguin colony.

Another attraction populated by tourists and locals alike, is The Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, built on the docks of the Port of Cape Town, is one of the city’s most popular shopping venues, with hundreds of shops and the world-class Two Oceans Aquarium. Still a working port, visitors can watch ships go by as they explore the V&A. The V&A is also popular departure point for ferries to infamous Robben Island, where former South African President Nelson Mandela and many other political ‘prisoners’ were held during the apartheid era. Now functioning as a World Heritage site, your tour guides are former political prisoners.

Cape Town's transport system is linked to the rest of the country and of course the rest of the province. The Winelands , especially Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschhoek, are popular day tours including sightseeing and wine tasting, and Franschhoek in particular is known as the gourmet capital of South Africa.

A settlement with strong cultural roots is the bustling township of Khayelitsha. You can take a township tour and see how the locals get by everyday. Take a guided tour of the colourful houses and cobbled streets of the Bo-Kaap , a muslim-populated area, and watch the children dressed up for Madrassa/Moslem School, and the call to prayer resounding from the various mosques, keeping alive the spirit of their Indo-Asian slave ancestors.

These are just a few of the attractions to do and see on your Cape Town holiday, and with so much to choose from, you’d never run out things to do. Capetonians are know to be friendly, so if you do want to see the Mother city through the eyes of her local ‘children’, you won’t have to look far to get good advice!

And another bonus is that many of the Cape Town attractions won’t break your bank! You can’t say the same for many other great cities of the world. So come to Cape Town, you have every reason to!
