Long Street - Cape Town's nightlife hub
Long Street is one of the oldest streets in Cape Town, and of course a pretty long one! Back in the day, 3.8 kilometres made for a really long stretch of road from Cape Town harbour to Tamboerskloof. Today, the road is still dotted with Victorian architecture, cast-iron balcony railings to boot.

A major street in the City Bowl of Cape Town, Long street has become a popular hang out for a diversity of people, and is one street where you can watch Cape Town walk by in every form and philosophy that makes up the myriad of the people. During the 1970’s and 80’s Long Street was home to a few theatres staging anti-apartheid plays, though it has had changed faces since then. The street is lined with bookstores old and new, ethnic restaurants and bars. Restaurants include African restaurants like Zula, and Indian restaurants like Masala Dosa. There’s always a backpackers waiting to open its doors to a wandering tourist

Long Street is also very popular as the nightlife spot in Cape Town. The street truly comes alive at night, especially weekends, with throngs of locals and visitors hitting the nightclubs. Cafes and bars are open till the early hours of the morning, and the street is buzzing with energy and lights.

A good way to see the sights and sounds of Long street:

Sundowners and something to eat- Long Street Café is an institution and is great for dinner and sundowners. Mama Africa’s for sundowners and an early evening meal- try the Mozambican peri-peri prawns. If you’re looking for something even more exotic for your palate, try Mesopotamia Kurdish Kitchen on the corner of Long and Church Street. Masala Dosa, a southern Indian restaurant, adds a hint of Bollywood (on the walls and décor) to Long Street. The Dubliner Irish Pub is where you want to be if you’re looking for a classy evening out. With cigars from all over the world to choose from, sophisticated cocktails and live jazz, you can’t go wrong.

Bars and clubs: A media hang out is Jo’burg Bar , trend-set at The Lounge. Zula Sound Experience is very popular live entertainment venue and gets you a peek at local talent with even poetry reading thrown into the mix. They also have tasty bites to eat.

Chrome on the corner of Pepper Street is a popular club with the younger crowd, and if you’re a metal-head or goth, The Purple Turtle is where you want to be. Fiction DJ Bar and Lounge is fashioned on classic works of fiction, and offers a combination of music and mix of DJs.
A very trendy and classy hotel to book into if you’re wanting to stay in the hub of the activity, is The Daddy Long Legs Art Hotel.

Another highlight and landmark in this road is the famous Long Street Baths, a popular Turkish bath and swimming pools that have been around since 1908. The side streets are also interesting; Longmarket Street in particular, where the bustling Greenmarket Square flea-market is open daily, selling African curios, paintings, clothes and leather goods.

Long Street in Cape Town has an addictive ambience and irrepressible spirit. Weekend nights take on a festival feel in this street which stretches 20 blocks from The Waterfront side of town to the Gardens side. With mosques, bars, even strip clubs all on the same street, it definitely has character in bundles!
