Top things to do & places to see in SA on a budget: Western Cape & Garden Route
The Western Cape (including Garden Route) is undoubtedly one the most popular regions for holidays in South Africa, and if you find yourself here on holiday, there will really never be a dull moment. To choose just a handful of activities and sights in the region is very difficult indeed, but if your time is short, then we suggest the following:
Robben Island Visit Robben Island and the Gateway museum at the ever-popular V&A Waterfront. Give yourself enough time to explore the exhibits in the avant-garde building. Take a ferry from the Waterfront, often accompanied by seals and dolphins, and once inside the prison which housed many political prisoners including Nelson Mandela, part of what makes this Heritage Site special is that your guide will be a former island prisoner. Other sites on the island include a lighthouse and a historical Muslim burial site or kramat. Read more on Robben Island.
Cape Point Nature Reserve This scenic reserve at the southern tip of the land has breathtaking views from literally every angle. Notorious for its treacherous seas(many a ship has seen its demise here), it offers unsurpassable walks due to the stunning ocean views as you walk from the car park perched on a cliff. If you’re feeling too tired to walk, there is a funicular, speeding up your visit. Part of the Table mountain national park, home to an entire floral kingdom, a day visit gives you enough time to take in the sights and sounds of the flora and fauna around you. Walk in the footsteps of the first visitors to the Cape and make the most of your holidays in South Africa! Darling This picturesque town in the Swartberg region is famous locally for its most well-known resident, Tannie Evita Bezuidenhout (political satirist Pieter Dirk-Uys’ alter ego). Darling is however more than just a showcase for South African arts, especially theatre. Take a stroll along the tree-lined streets, and the old Victorian homes, and of course try some traditional South African food that will have you coming back for more.
Knysna picnic If you’re looking to spoil your other half on your holidays in South Africa, the Garden Route has lots of places to offer. Try a picnic at the sheltered cove of Coney Glen. If you want a quiet afternoon fishing, get your permit at the Knysna Post Office, and relax with a sundowner from the local brewery, Mitchells.
Outeniqua choo-tjoe Take time out to play again, and revisit your childhood with a train trip between Knysna and George on the old-fashioned steam train, the Outeniqua choo-tjoe. Dating back to 1907, the trip offers stunning views of the Indian Ocean and the lush Garden Route. From your windows you can see the St. Blaze Lighthouse and also visit a number of tourist spots at the end of the journey.
Plettenberg Bay wildlife If you have your kids along with you on holidays in South Africa, and are looking for something to keep them tied up for hours, three animal centres in close proximity of each other is a sure-fire winner. First up is Monkeyland, a sanctuary for rescued primates of all shapes and sizes. This is a paradise for them as they roam freely while visitors use aerial walkways and paths to view them. Entrance is free, except for guided safaris. Next up, Birds of Eden is the largest single free-flight aviary in the world. This two-hectare dome spans indigenous forest and is accessible via elevated walkways. There are over 200 bird species in this wheelchair-friendly park. The Crags Elephant Sanctuary is bound to get the kids excited, as interactive programmes are designed to ensure both the animals and the humans are happy.
