Named after the river that flows along the province’s northern border, Limpopo is an abundant wealth of wildlife, breathtaking scenery and a treasure of history and culture. History and relics date back to the Stone and Iron ages, including the ancient World Heritage Site at Mapungubwe. Limpopo has plenty to offer. Straddling the northern Kruger National Park, the land is big country with wide, open bushveld and make for perfect South African safari. A distinguishing feature is that being predominantly a rural land, large areas still remain untouched by human development, ideal for nature and wildlife enthusiasts.
So what makes Limpopo a special South African safari destination? You can get two safaris for the price of one as Limpopo is blessed with safari land in Kruger National Park, as well as the World Heritage Site of ancient Mapungubwe.
POPULAR GAME RESERVES:
Timbavati Game Reserve
Sharing a border with the Kruger National Park, animals roam freely in this unfenced Reserve sporting a great diversity of South African wildlife. A South African Big Five Game Reserve, due to location sometimes suffers from drought, as it only experiences occasional rainfall. However, winter is perfect for safaris by day and campfire by night.
Selati Game Reserve
An impressive South African game reserve where you can be up close to lions, white rhinos and elephants. Selati is north of the Olifants River, overlooking the Drakensberg.
Camps are unfenced, with wildlife often wandering through the camp sites, getting you really close to nature! Look out for: baboon, zebra, bushbaby, spring hare, jackal, honey badger, mongoose, hyrax, wildebeest, giraffe, caracal, African wild cat, and antelope.
Greater Kruger Park
African sunrises and sunsets, the dusky earth with all kinds of animals running sfreely, this is the Kruger Park, and the quintessential African and South African safari. If you know no other game reserve in South Africa, you will most definitely have heard of The Kruger National Park.
Spanning the provinces of Mpumalanga and Limpopo in the north of South Africa, the Park is also part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, a ‘peace’ park joining Kruger National Park with parks in bordering Zimbabwe and Mozambique. Free of fences this allows game uninhibited reign of the grazing land. Baobabs, knob thorns, marula and mopane trees, from a canopy of sorts for the wildlife teeming beneath, including Big Five, the Little Five (buffalo weaver, elephant shrew, leopard tortoise, ant lion and rhino beetle), birds and is proud to boast more species of mammals than any other African Game Reserve.
Welgevonden Game Reserve
3 hours drive north of OR Tambo Airport, Welgevonden Game Reserve is a "Big Five", malaria free Game Reserve in the Waterberg District. A declared Heritage Site, this bushveld environment is proud of one of the largest private land collections of white rhino.
